The
international code for Spain is +34. All
numbers in Spain are nine digits long without
area codes.
Public pay phones
Public pay phones in Spain are blue and
easy to use. They accept coins and tarjetas
telefonicas (phone cards) which come in
different denominations. They are available
at post offices and estancos and are usually
more economical and safer than carrying
cash around. Some phones do not accept cash
anyway. They can be used until the credit
expires. To use them tear off the breakable
section at the top before inserting in the
payphone. When you dial, its value appears
in the window. After you hang up, the card
is returned so you can use it until its
value runs out. The best time to phone is
usually between 10pm and 8am or anytime
on Sundays or holidays.
Calling Internationally
The best option for dialling internationally
is to buy a card with a calling number (these
do not insert into the pay phone but can
be used at pay phones). Instructions and
numbers are listed on the back of the cards.
Some of these have a set rate for phoning
at any time of day.

Many travellers choose to travel with mobile
phones for making reservations, keeping
in touch with family and friends (especially
other travel friends) and are essential
if you are looking for work. Generally a
pre-paid mobile phone deal will ultimately
save you more money. Spain and most European
countries use the 900 Mhz GSM mobile network
so most mobile phones purchased in Australia,
New Zealand or South Africa will work in
as long as the SIM card is not locked. The
GSM system is not compatible with mobile
phones in North America. Some mobile networks
use the 1800 Mhz system which work with
dual-band phones. In Spain there are a number
of mobile phone networks.
Voicemail and Fax
Voicemail is a good option if you don't
have a phone but still want a phone number.
If you need to send or receive faxes in
Spain many post offices, shops or offices
with "Fax Publico" signs can do
this for you.
