Catalans are different to the rest of the Spanish, not only for their language (Catalan) but also their independence and sense of humour. If you don’t speak Catalan in Barcelona you may have some trouble communcating as most signs are not in English. But in tourist areas and in hotels you should be fine. The best time to visit is in the spring. Summers are very hot and crowded and most events take place in Barcelona. At both times prices go up.
