AIR
Bilbao’s airport (944 86 96 36; www.aena.es) is near Sondika, 12km northeast of the city. Services are excellent including those to/from Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Arrecife, Fuenteventura, Las Palmas, Málaga, Palma, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Tenerife, Valencia, Vigo, Brussels, Frankfurt, Lisbon, London, Milan, Paris and Zurich.

The airport is linked to major cities via the following roads;
- A8 to Santander (108 km) to the West and San Sebastián (119 km), Bayona (160 km) y Pau (265 km) to the East
- A68 to Vitoria-Gasteiz (66 km), Logroño (152 km), Burgos (158 km) and Pamplona (159 km).
To get to/from the airport by bus take Bizkaibus A3247, a yellow urban bus from Termibús (also provides connections with San Mamés metro station, Euskotran, and RENFE short-distance trains). TRAIN
There are three suburban train systems operating in Bilbao: EuskoTren, FEVE and RENFE. Stick to RENFE if you have a rail pass.

The Cercanías (Aldirikoak) suburban train network operated by RENFE has three lines. The Santurtzi line is the busiest with trains every 10 minutes, the Orduña line has a half-hourly service. Fares are based on zone with central Bilbao zone one and fares are cheaper on weekdays. Single tickets are €0.90 for trips in zone one and two, €1 for trips to zone three.

The RENFE station Estación de Abando (Plaza Circular 2, tel. 90 224 0202;
www.renfe.es) has short distance trains within metropolitan Bilbao and long distance trains around Spain. You can go to Madrid, Barcelona, Galicia, Alicante, Valencia and Malaga. The Renfe Abando station is across the river from Plaza Arriaga and has daily trains to Madrid, Barcelona, Burgos and Valladolid.

EuskoTren (
www.euskotren.es, tel. 902 543210) operates two suburban train lines with trains running every 15-20 minutes. Services operate between San Sebastian and Bilbao and Bermeo and Bilbao. They also have a service to Hendaye on the French border Their regional services are from Atxuri Station, 1km upriver from Casco Viejo.

The narrow gauge railway FEVE (Ferrocarriles de Via Estrecha, tel. 944 23 22 66; www.feve.es) operates a suburban line to Balmaseda. This operates from Corcordia Station and along the north coast sping at Santander, Oviedo and Ferrol.


METRO
The Metro Bilbao (www.metrobilbao.net/eng/usuario/mapainteractivo.html) runs through the city and connects to the beaches to the north-west of the city.
 

FERRIES
P&O Ferries and Acciona Transmediterránea sail between Bilbao and Portsmouth. Ferries depart from Santurtzi in Spain (Avda. Cristóbal Murrieta, s/n, Santurtzi, tel. 944 839 494). Contact details of the ferry companies are as follows:

To get to Santurtzi from Bilbao:
- By bus take Bizkaibus line A-3151 from Plaza Jado.
- By train RENFE C-1 short distance train to Santurtzi station from Abando station
- By car A-8 highway to Santander, exit "Santurtzi-Puerto"
 

BUS
The main bus station in Bilbao is Termibús (Gurtubay 1, Tel. 94 439 50 77) southwest of the centre. You can get to anywhere in the city from here as it is accessible by the Renfe Short Distance lines, Bilbao Tramway (EuskoTran) and the metro (San Mames Bilbao Underground station). Services from Termibús operate to/from Madrid, Barcelona, Burgos, Vitoria, Pamplona, Logroño, Irún and the French border, Santander and Oviedo (€17.60, five hours). Pesa (tel. 902 101210) operates to San Sebastian, Durango-Elorrio and Oñati. Bizkaibus (tel. 902 22 22 65) operates around rural Basque including places like Lekeito and Beremo.

FUNICULAR
 There is also a funicular between Plaza Funicular (Castaños Street) and Mountain Artxanda. From the you can enjoy a view of Bilbao.



HITCHING
The Basque region is not the most successful for hitch hiking due to the low volume of traffic on the roads. For long journeys try the web-based ride sharing service at http://www.europe.bugride.com


DRIVING
Traffic is not congested in Bilbao and finding your way around should not be a problem. Check your hotel has parking provided. Car rental is available at the airport and other centres. Agencies operating in Bilbao include:

Major roads include:
A8 – links the northern Atlantic seacoast to western France. It is also is connected to Barcelona and Madrid.


MOTORCYCLE
You can rent motorbikes from major car rental companies.


BIKING AND WALKING
This may be a cheaper, safer and healthier way to get around. Ask at your hotel or hostel for the nearest places to rent good bikes or do walking tours. Check out our tour pages for biking and walking holidays in Spain.

TICKETS
Buy tickets for local buses on board from the conductor or from newsstands or the station in advance. For long distance journeys you need to buy the ticket from the station counter.
