Like other places in Basque country, food in central to life in Bilbao. If you don’t come here to eat you’re missing out on one of the major selling points of Bilbao. The town has many creative new restaurants but plenty that also have founded themselves on historic recipes and traditions. The result is an array of choice and always high quality. The Casco Viejo neighbourhood across the river from the train station is the place to head for restaurants. Café Guggenheim This restaurant and cafe are in keeping with the rest of the museum; chic and classy with a view of the river. There’s good Basque cooking here and it’s not as expensive as other places.
Ave Abandoibarra 2, C Alameda Mazarredo Tel. 944 23 93 33 Zortziko Pricey but worth a splurge, this place is a bit of an institution in Bilbao with a Michelin star. It’s located in a 19th century mansion and offers contemporary haute cuisine with local roots. There are three dining rooms, each with a different style including the British and Versailles salons and Exhibition Room. Etxanobe Located on the floor of the Euskalduna Palace and beautifully decorated. Dishes are rich and tasty and the chef is another renowned Michelin star artist who utilises the region’s rich culinary traditions. Palacio Euskalduna, Avenida de Abandoibarra 4

Jolastoki
An older local establishment with lots of knick knacks and a great fireplace and bar with a good selection of liquor and cigars. Avda. de los Chopos, Leioako 24, Neguri-Getxo MARKETS La Ribera With three floors covering seafood, meat, vegetables and fruit this is supposed to the world's largest covered market. It’s a great place to visit and you’ll soon work up an apetite with rows of cured meats and very fresh produce for sale. CAFES Café Boulevard This place has been operating since 1871 and a great place to have breakfast amidst the Art Deco surroundings.
