Like other Basque centres such as San Sebastian and Pamplona, this busy industrial city has a major claim to fame – it’s incredible Guggenheim museum with treasures including works by Picasso, Braque, Ernst, Schiele, Kandinsky and Miro. But while the museum has created a name for Bilbao, there’s more to the city than just the Guggenheim. It’s a very sophisticated place, the cuisine is out of this world (and that’s saying something in Spain), there’s plenty of rich Basque culture to enjoy, locals are friendly and plenty of non stop partying opportunities. And if culture is your bent there are also collections of Basque art at the Museo de Bellas Artes.
Bilbao is Spain’s sixth largest city with over one million inhabitants. It’s also the busiest port in the nation and bustles with shipping, shipbuilding, steelmaking and banking. Come prepared for plenty of activity and action.
