Granada is another of Andalucia’s gems, in fact its one of the most alluring places in the province. Its Moorish past is encaptured perfectly in the amazing Alhambra which dominates the city skyline. Many visitors are entranced by the Alhambra and could spend days exploring its palaces and gardens. This hilltop fortress is a feature landmark in Spain and made even more famous by Washington Irving in his Tales of the Alhambra. The Alhambra was a palace of the Nasrid kings, Spain’s last Muslim rulers.
But it’s far from being the only thing worth seeing in Granada. There are also fantastic Arab tea and bath houses to frequent, markets lining narrow alleyways in the Albayzín, warm sunny plaza’s and a resident gypsy population. Some of the joys of exploring this city are the free tapas – buy a beer and score a plate of food, the colourful flamenco clubs, the friendly hip population and plenty of Arab style kebab and cake shops. It’s also worth spending a few days in the region around Granada. Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, is only a day trip away and has picturesque villages to explore and great walking and skiing opportunities. You could easily wile away a week based in Granada.
