SPECIAL EVENTS
The bull fighting season in Madrid runs from March to October. Events take place most Sundays. There are two bullrings, the Plaza Monumental de las Ventas (metro Ventas) and by metro Vista Alegre. It’s best to buy tickets in advance from agencies or at the rings.
Go to the festivals page
for more festivals around Spain.

San Isidro, Madrid (May 9)
Celebrates the male patron saint of Madrid and also heralds the start of the bullfighting season in the city. Celebrations begin the Friday before May 15 with cooking of an enormous Cocido Madrileño (local dish) and on the 15th there is traditional dancing, open air concerts and locals wear their traditional dress. The bullfighting is also the world’s largest event with  bullfighters and breeders.

Virgen de la Almudena, Madrid (November 9)
This is a celebration of Madrid’s female Patron Saint, whose image was first brought to Spain by the Apostle James. It was hidden so the conquering Arabs would not find it. After they were expelled 300 years later, the King asked the people to pray they could find it and it was found hidden in a place called Almudin by the Arabs. On November 9 there is a mass at Plaza Mayor followed by a procession that takes the image along Calle Mayor and Arenal until it is returned to the Cathedral of the Almudena.
