Pamplona’s bars and restaurants have a growing reputation for superb pintxos and a healthy, lively young Basque culture. If you like food you’ll love the mix of Basque, French and Spanish cuisine in Pamplona that come in big portions. SPECIALTY FOOD Some specialities include: chuletones de buey or de ternera - enormous ox or veal t-bone steaks txistorra – a pork product like chorizo Bull meat - particularly popular at San Fermín and especially the tail (rabos de toro estfado) Game meat - wild boar and venison. Wine – produce of Navarra rivals La Rioja so look out for rosados and rosés particularly but any red or white wine is good here You will also find fish such as hake, sea bream, squid, river salmon and trout are popular. People from this region also like their legumes, red kidney beans, asparagus, tomatoes and peppers. And setas (mushrooms) are often collected wild or cultivated. CAFES Bar Ulzama, Calle de San Nicolas, good snack food Bar Anaitasuna, Calle de San Gregorio 58, tel. 948 22 79 56 has bocadillos and sandwiches. It’s also a good spot for breakfast. Basseri, Calle San Nicolás 32, Tel. 948 22 20 21, is the place for pintxo. Treats include venison with wild mushrooms or ostrich with Idiázabal cheese. RESTAURANTS Bar San Nicolás, 13 Calle de San Nicolas, has a cheaper menu than other places if you’re on a budget. There’s paella, bacalao (salted cod) and various Basque foods. Some of the more famed restaurants in town include the following three: Hartza, Juan de Labrit 19, tel. 94 822 4568, one of the oldest places in town. It doesn’t have a Michelin star but is very competitve with quality generous dishes and outdoor dining options. Seasons dictate the plates but you’re bound to come across hake or eel, stuffed peppers and in season vegetable soups. Europa, Calle Espoz y Mina 11, tel. 94 822 1800, is renowned in Pamplona for its local chef and wonderful seasonal menu. Try oven roasted lobster, hake in pil pil sauce (garlic and parsely) or a dessert such as orange mousse.
Josetxo, Plaza Príncipe de Viana 1, tel. 94 822 2097, is one of the finest places in town run by a local family. The menu might include sea bass in white wine, rabbit or trout dishes and chocolate truffle tart.
BARS Most bars, bodegas, pubs and tascas are in the Calle de San Nicolas, Calle Estafeta and Calle de Jarauta. Many will not be signed so wander along and go into whatever place appeals. La Cepa, Calle de San Lorenzo 2, tel. 948 21 31 45, is a good place for a drink or snack. If you are hungry they do have meals. Cafe Iruna, Plaza del Castillo 44, tel. 94-822-20-64, is another popular place for drinks or snacks and open 9am-9.30pm. They have an outdoor terrace popular in summer. Lunch meals are served. Cafetería El Molino, Bayona 13, tel. 94-825-10-90, is in Barrio San Juan and is popular late in the evening. Tapas here come in all shapes and sizes and are pretty affordable.
