The San Sebastian card is available at the tourist office and allows access to public transport and also discounts and free admission to various attractions. It is valid for 5 days and is good for 12 journeys on city transport and one free guided tour. The cards cost €13.

There is a bus "Fuenterrabia-San Sebastian" that ss close to the airport every 30 minutes and takes around 45 minutes. If your luggage is heavy better take a taxi. For an alternative arrival point Biarritz airport (BIA) in France is 50 km away. Connections here include London Stansted, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, and Madrid. (Air France and Iberia Airlines). Tel. + 33 559 43 83 83 Fax: +33 559 43 83 86. Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) flies from Biarritz to Stansted. To get to San Sebastian walk to the station and take a train to the Spanish border. Then walk to the Spanish town or Irun and board the narrow guage train to San Sebastian. Bilbao Airport (BIO - Sondika) is 96 km away. Bilbao is a good place to get intercontinental flights via London, Frankfurt and Paris. Bilbao airport is connected with Basel, Brussels, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Geneva, Lisbon, London, Milan, Paris, Porto, and Tunisia. Tel: 94-486 9301. EasyJet (www.easyjet.com) flies from here to London Stansted. Iberia (www.iberaairlines.co.uk) also fly from here to Heathrow. Regular coach services connect Bilbao and San Sebastian. TRAIN RENFE trains depart from across the river on Paseo de Francia. It serves stations outside the Basque country and if you’re using a rail pass you’ll need this station. Daily trains run to Madrid (6-9 hours), Barcelona (9-10.5 hours) via Pamplona and Zaragoza. One train runs direct to Paris (6 hours, 9 each day) several others also run but require a change at Hendaye on the border for the French SNCF network. Other trains from Hendaye also depart for Paris. EuskoTren services operate from the station at the south end of town on Calle de Easo. They operate to Bilbao and Hendaye (where you can change trains for France). BUS The bus station is 20 minutes walk south of the city near Plaza de Pio XII. Local bus 28 connects the bus station with Alameda del Boulevard. The ticket offices of most bus lines is nearby on Avenida de Sancho el Sabio. Buses leave here for destinations all over Spain: Bilbao (1 hour), Pamplona (2 hours), Madrid, Barcelona etc. Companies include: Continental Auto (tel. 943 46 90 74) to Madrid (12 times daily), Vitoria (10 daily) and Burgos (7 daily). La Roncalesa (tel. 943 46 10 64) has 10 services to Pamplona.
PESA (tel. 902 10 12 10) runs to Bilbao along the A8 auista (tollway) and to Durango, Elorrio and Oñati, plus twice-daily buses to Hendaye, St Jean de Luz, Biarritz and Bayonne in France.
Interbus services to Hondarribia, Irún and the airport depart from Plaza de Guipúzcoa; buses A1 and G1 travel to Hernani and Astigarraga from the s on Calle de Echaide.
HITCHING San Sebastian should be a relatively easy place to hitch from especially to places around the Basque country. Head to the roads leaving town. For long journeys try the web-based ride sharing service at http://www.europe.bugride.com DRIVING Traffic is not as congested in San Sebastian as other Spanish centres however visitors may still find it a little nervewracking. Try to avoid peak times if you are a bit unsure. Check your hotel has parking provided or ask where the nearest parking lot is, there are a number of underground car parks. If you are planning to drive to/from San Sebastian here are some helpful road details: A8 auista - to Bilbao in the west and into France (where it becomes the A63) to the east. Auto Europe Hertz Avis BIKING AND WALKING This may be a cheaper, safer and healthier way to get around. Ask at your hotel or hostel for the nearest places to rent good bikes or do walking tours. The route does pass through Pamplona (1 hour by bus) and you can join it there. Go to our walking pages for more details. You can take your bike on to RENFE and EuskoTren services. EuskoTren does give other travellers preference so if you have a group call them beforehand tel. +34 902-543210. RENFE (tel. +34 943-649637) allows train access Mon-Fri 9am-12.30pm & 4-6pm. Sat and public holidays 5.30am-4pm.
